The impact of ultra-processed foods on health

Public Health and Social Medicine

Researchers here examined all existing meta-analyses on the links between exposure to ultra-processed foods and adverse health effects. A total of 45 meta-analyses were retained, involving 9,888,373 participants. Direct associations were found between exposure to ultra-processed foods and 32 health parameters: mortality, cancer, mental health, respiratory health, cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal health, metabolic health. The data were particularly robust for the link with incidence of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, anxiety and other mental disorders. These data underline the importance of public health messages about ultra-processed foods. Further studies are needed to explore the underlying mechanisms.
